The year of 2020 brings about a couple of disastrous obstacles in nearly everyone’s lives, from natural to human occurring ones. One of the major highlights of this year being the Pandemic as well as the worldwide protests regarding racial issues, often quoted as ‘Black Lives Matter.’ What exactly causes these protests that spread all over America, bringing about awareness regarding racism?
People will claim that everything started from the murder of a black man named George Floyd, but the beginning of these protests started a long long time ago, with the police force using their power against innocent black men, killing hundreds all across the United States Of America. A couple more names include; Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and a lot more, it’s a never-ending list. Rage, despair, and the need for justice erupted in every citizen in the United States, allowing them to raise their voice against this unraveling behavior against the black men of the community.
The protesters often faced rubber bullets that bruised them, chemicals sprayed in their eyes and were forced to quieten down by the police forces, but this lead to a greater outrage among the people and they ended up burning down police stations and fighting back for the greater good.
Despite all these protests, another hurdle that the citizens faced was the life-threatening virus also known as Covid-19. Taking hundreds of lives this virus was there, along with the protesters the whole time, putting their own lives at risk. Although none of this stopped the protesters, the World Health Organization advised them to take all the precautionary measures, didn’t stop them from raising their voices against such an issue.
Yet still, some reports claimed that these protests were the root cause of the increase in the virus outbreak and the death rate in America. As people were brought together in a crowd and stood shoulder to shoulder, not focusing on the major precaution of this pandemic; social distancing. Amid that, every citizen tried their best to be careful, wear masks, and take care of their as well as the health of others around them.
Later on, as Hilary Brueck stated in her article ‘Don’t blame Black Lives Matter protests for the spike in coronavirus cases across the US.’ these protests never really increased the number of patients that were infected with this virus. The hoax was spreading to scare the people away, but the protesters filled with rage were not backing down, they were very well aware of the rules they had to follow during these times. Wearing a mask at all times, trying their best to practice social distancing, taking care of their environment. Everyone followed all these steps in order to not let a virus come between them and the police brutality that has been going around for years.
In conclusion to my above-stated points, even a fatal virus such as Covid-19 could not stop the protesters who were only looking for justice against racism and were rooting for world peace as well as equality.
