Robin Hood Foundation Gala:

Held annually in Manhattan, this soiree is the largest fund-raising event in the country, with proceeds supporting more than 200 community groups fighting poverty in New York City. Nearly 4,000 guests made their way to the Jacob K. Javits Center for the 2019 event, themed “Robin Hood to the Power of You.” The evening included performances from Sean Mendes and Pharrell, while Eli Manning, Kenan Thompson, and Gayle King also made appearances. Although the Robin Hood Foundation declined to release its fund-raising total, at least 23 people each pledged one million dollars throughout the course of the evening.

New York Fashion Week:

This semi-annual event always attracts famous faces, but this year A-list celebrities like Jennifer Lopez and Rihanna took to the runways as models. Reimagining the traditional fashion show, designers used New York’s distinctive landscape to stage events in unexpected venues, like Tom Ford’s exhibition in a deserted subway station, Ralph Lauren’s one-night-only jazz club, and the Collina Strada show, which incorporated a farmers’ market to convey the brand’s commitment to sustainability. The fall shows made history on two fronts: Pierre Davis became the first openly transgender designer to show at New York Fashion Week, and childrenswear label Lulu et Gigi featured the event’s first double-amputee model: nine-year-old Daisy-May Demetre.

Maroon 5 headlined the halftime show, which also included performances from Big Boi and Travis Scott. In addition to the game, a weeklong program of events drew more than 500,000 people to music shows, interactive fan festivals, and community events leading up to Super Bowl Sunday. Per the Nielsen ratings, 98.2 million people watched the broadcast.

White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner:

After a controversial performance from comedian Michelle Wolf in 2018, the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner switched gears this year by selecting Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Ron Chernow to give remarks. Chernow focused on the history of journalism and celebrated the First Amendment rather than offering insult comedy. Selling out as usual, the event drew 2,600 attendees and was aired on C-SPAN. Donald Trump, the only president not to attend since the 1920s, was noticeably absent again this year.
