As opposed to utopian ideologies, life is not perfect. Humans, as emotionally driven creatures, tend to experience ups and downs in life, throughout which, there’s no option but to endure them in silence. Sometimes we experience sadness, sometimes anxiety or loneliness and sometimes we’re just simply too exhausted and overwhelmed with the problems that life throws at us. At times like these, we tend to feel hopeless, wishing desperately for a solution, wishing for a ‘perfect’ life as we observe the seemingly ‘happy’ people around us.

Here’s a piece of truth: they’re just like you and me, dealing with life as it goes. While there’s no way we can have a perfect life, there’s always room for improvement. How can we improve the quality of our mundane, exhausting life? How can we maintain ourselves physically and how can we enhance our mental abilities?

The answer is simple: tweak your lifestyle: cut off bad habits and adopt healthier ones.

Habits can, both, negatively and positively impact one’s life depending on the nature of the habit acquired. Therefore, it is necessary for an individual to strive to adopt the healthiest habits while cutting down on the detrimental ones in order to achieve a happy life. Just like Aristotle stated:

Good habits formed at youth make all the difference’

Here are some easily practicable habits that you can embrace to guarantee a considerable improvement in your life:

  1. Detoxify your mind

Just like the body needs occasional detoxification, our mind does too. Here are a few simple ways we can achieve that:

  • Be selfish, not in a negative way, of course. We should make a habit of putting our interests and needs before the pleasure of others.

  • We should minimize mingling with people who affect our mood in a negative way.

  • We should make it a routine to count our blessings every night or write about things we’re grateful for in a diary to avoid feeling jealous of others’ achievements and success.

  • Forgive and forget. We must learn to forgive people even before they have asked for it.

There’s a long list of things we can do to detoxify our minds, only if we make it a habit to practice them every day or even once a week.

  1. Spread love and kindness

Our busy schedules leave scarce time for us to connect and interact with people. Every once in awhile, however, it is important to put our responsibilities aside and do something in the name of love. Whether its something we do to boost self-love or something we do to spread love among others, it does not matter. What matters is the thought behind our actions. We should make it a habit to do acts of love and kindness to spread positivity, for instance, spending time with the elderly, visiting family, feeding the homeless or donating to charity. Not only will this improve the quality of our life by making us feel content, but it will also be appreciated by the people that we’re showing kindness to.

  1. Learn something new

No matter how busy we are with work, school, and life in general, it is imperative to make sure that we never let ourselves feel like we know everything. Irrespective of age, we should constantly strive to learn new things in order to enhance our knowledge. Learning is a therapeutic process, a beneficial exercise, and a healthy activity. We should make a habit of learning something new every day — even if it’s a single word to add to our vocabulary — until our mind starts yearning for knowledge.

A little knowledge goes a long way and learning, in my opinion, is the best habit that one can adopt in order to improve their quality of life.

  1. Exercise

Exercise and physical activity are essential for an upgraded life experience. We should make it a routine to go for at least a half an hour walk every morning. Not only will this keep us in shape, fit, and healthy but also boost our metabolism, increase efficiency, and reduce our risk of heart diseases while keeping our weight in check. Once we become habitual of working out, life will take a turn for the better.

  1. Sleep early

Remember when our parents used to make a huge fuss about bedtimes? Well, they were right. Sleeping early has health benefits. Believe it or not, a sound sleep of a minimum of 7-8 hours increases productivity hours, impacts our mood in a positive way while also keeping our mental health in check. Research suggests it also strengthens the immune system while boosting memory and life expectancy. We love sleeping anyway — albeit during unconventional times — why not make a habit of sleeping at the right time.

There are various other activities we can take on to improve our lifestyle and make ourselves accustomed to healthy living, out of which, these are only a few. While taking on a new activity with the aim of making it a habit to improve life might be a hard task to do, the positivity that it brings into ones’ life is hard to ignore. Healthy habits, therefore are a pathway to a healthy mind, soul, and body.
