Apple’s laptop lineup has become more streamlined than ever as it now consists of a 13inch MacBook air, a 16inch MacBook Pro, and a recently launched 13inch MacBook pro.
But which is the model that fulfills all your needs? In this article, I would compare the designs, specifications where both of the MacBooks have similarities and differences plus underlining the pros and cons of each and the aspects you need to consider before spending your money on either one.
The major focus would be on the 13inch MacBook Pro and MacBook air (due to the similar size) but the comparison would be done with a 16inch MacBook pro where needed.
Similarities
Both of the MacBook classes have been given a 13inch retina display with 227 pixels per inch and Truetone support. The two MacBook’s have been appointed with a Magic Keyboard, Force Touch trackpad, Touch id, and Dolby Atom’s surround sound. Both MacBook’s have been equipped with 256GB of SSD standard storage (which is upgradable up to 2TB), a 720p webcam,2 thunderbolt ports, 3.5mm headphone jack, T2 security chip, Bluetooth 5.0 plus 802.11ac Wi-Fi as named as Wi-Fi 5 and Three microphone array with direct beamforming
Pros of Macbook Air
The MacBook Air starts at 999$ while the MacBook pro’s base price is 1299$. The MacBook Air provides up to 11 hours of battery life as compared to the Pro’s 10-hour battery life. The Air is a little lighter than the Pro as it weighs around 2.8 pounds while the Pro weighs about 3.1 pounds. The MacBook Air has faster Ram than the base MacBook pro as the Air has 3733MHZ LPDDR4X vs the Pro’s 2133MHZ LPDDR3. The air provides 6k support and the Pro’s base model provides 5K. A minor advantage the Air has over both the 16inch and 13 inch MacBook pro is that it also comes in a gold option
Pros of MacBook pro
The MacBook Pro might be a bit more expensive than the MacBook air but it has got some advantages up its sleeve. Its display supports P3 wide color gamut making it look more vibrant than its competitor. The MacBook pro’s display can brighten up to 500 nits But the Air’s display can get up to 400 nits. The Pro also consists of a touch bar which makes it easy for the user to interact with the computer. The Pro has been equipped with slightly better speakers as compared with the Airs.
Performance
Performance-wise both of the laptops are best in their own capacities. The MacBook Air is the best when it comes to doing daily tasks such as surfing through the internet or creating presentations or doing other simpler tasks. The MacBook Pro comes into use when one has to do rigorous tasks such as video editing or graphic designing and other exhausting tasks. The MacBook Pro has the advantage not because its processor is more efficient than the Air’s but also because It has a much better developed thermal design for keeping the laptop cool during completing intensive tasks.
Overall all the base MacBook pro has up to 91 percent faster multicore score than the base model MacBook air as confirmed by Geek bench 5 scores listed below.
- MacBook Air / 1.1GHz dual-core Core i3:1,002 single-core and 1,998 multi-core
- MacBook Air / 1.1GHz quad-core Core i5:1,055 single-core and 2,645 multi-core
- MacBook Air / 1.2GHz quad-core Core i7:1,102 single-core and 2,843 multi-core
- MacBook Pro / 1.4GHz quad-core Core i5:927 single-core and 3,822 multi-core
- MacBook Pro / 1.7GHz quad-core Core i7:1,036 single-core and 3,909 multi-core
Verdict
All in all, it depends on the needs of the individual. If the person wants to carry out a simple day to day task then the MacBook Air is the choice to be made as it perfectly fits this category. If the MacBook Air is one’s choice then the person should spend another 100$ for the upgraded processor as the base model’s processor is really sluggish.
If one wants to do intensive work then the MacBook Pro is made for them. The reason the MacBook Pro is perfect for such a person is that it has a developed thermal design that would keep the laptop cool plus it would have a touch bar, a much brighter and vibrant display and better-sounding speakers. Even though the MacBook pro would be a hit on the wallet but it would be worth it.
